Smile XML & PHP - can it be done?

I am building a commercial website from scratch, using PHP/MySQL.

The USPS makes their shipping rates available through a series of webtools, using XML queries and responses.

I can build the correct XML string. I have the address to fire it off to.

I have not been able to locate, in the references and sources I have available, how to send an XML Query, and receive a response.

The question is, am I barking up the wrong tree? Is this something I need to code in Perl, or some other CGI method?

I have heard about using curl, through php? Would this be a possible solution.

Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated.

I know it can be done but I am not the best person to answer this. I sugges that you ask the moderator to move this post to the PHP forum because I think you will have a bigger chance to get a quick answer.
