phpdev4 is out for those interested.

phpdev4 is a selfextracting zip of
    php4.06/apache1.3.20/MySQL3.23/phpMyAdmin2.02/Zend Optimizer + (optional) ActivePerl(5.6)/MySQLFront -

preconfigured to run on win 9*/NT/2K/XP - its good for getting started with PHP, especially if you have little experience with setting up web-servers etc .
In this version PHP runs as an Apache module.

    http://www.firepages.com.au/dev4.htm

Why PERL ? - cos peeps keep yakking on about it
MySQL Front? - excellent win GUI for MySQL & ODBC - makes importing those pesky MS Access files into MySQL where they belong (j/k) & vice-versa if you feel that way
    .

I am this >< (thats a gnats thingy) far away from having a working postgreSQL to add to the bundle (2K/NT/XP only) & GTK integration is not far behind - TCL/TK / RUBY / PYTHON are close as well - anyone who has a compiled MOD_RUBY binary that they do not want can send it to me !!

Faaaantastic I've lost count of the number of people I've recommended phpdev3 to, looks like I'll be able to pimp phpdev4 instead now

I'd kill for a working version of postgresql on Win98 though ;(

Excellent news! I was a complete newbe to PHP when I downloaded phpdev3. It couldn't have been easier to install and I haven't had any problems so far. Thanks for making PHP newbes' lives easier, firepages!

    WOW! Great!

I used the first few versions when I was getting started with PHP and it really helped!

    When you say it runs PHP as an Apache module do you mean not as CGI mode? If this is so I will really want to download it! So you can run mysql_pconnect();

yep it now runs as an apache module & utilises the zend optimizer so mysqlp_connect etc work , but when running as a module I am pretty sure that php 'trys' to keep connections alive anyway? not sure

Seconded! phpdev3 was excellent for me, I'm notoriously good at messing things up and breaking my PC whenever I try to install anything but I got that working in about one minute. phpdev4 sounds even better; if only I could get a version of postgreSQL on my ME maching I'd be fully set

Thanks for phpdev3 and 4, excellent work that man!

Can we have a selective list of what modules in Cygwin we would need to download? As I'm sure I wouldn't need some of those just to run Postgres. BTW people, Cygwin is a UNIX emulation layer for windows, so its not for a production enviroment, only for developing.

Personally I downloaded the source and compiled it for Linux...

I do not know which are essential for Cygwin and PostgreSQL so you are better getting everything.

    You also need Cygipc from:

    http://www.neuro.gatech.edu/users/cw...ipc/index.html

It is quite complicated. I have been thinking of creating a how-to website for this, what do you think?

yes please ! - I have cygwin etc but if things work because of it , its more luck than judgement for me

    oooh yes...in a command prompt...

    c:\phpdev\apache\apache.exe -i
    or
    c:\phpdev\apache\apache.exe -install

either should work & if you stick a shortcut to mysqld-opt.exe in your start-up folder you have the lot running on auto
