when it was a small box and only edited a little CSS but MAN
this software hit puberty and got HOT.
Check it out :X I cant believe how amazing it is.

Why do we even need a seperate editor for CSS? What's wrong with one that does many things ....... like EditPlus?
Notepad is my freind.

Daft question but I use Dreamweaver's CSS feature. Do your examples do something different/better?
EDIT: Welcome Elessar to Sitepoint.

I use dreamweaver's editor as well. I love it.

Dreamweaver editor or notepad.

I'm going to suggest that this gets moved to the Computers and Software forum because it's a topic that I think is well worth discussing and it's because of this continued argument of using Notepad (insert text editor of choice here) as an alternative to writing CSS or any other code.
I've had DW since (I think) version 2 and it has been absolutely brilliant. Like everyone else that started designing websites more than a couple of years ago I used tables. DW coped brilliantly with tables. Now a lot of us (and I can't say most because a glance at other forums will show a lot still use tables - and if the BBC and Google still do who's to say they're wrong?) are moving away from tables and are using CSS for positioning, formatting and compliance with modern techniques and developments. Dreamweaver has seen this and developed an excellent CSS editor to cope. DW8 is even better than MX and that was good.
Dreamweaver is also "good" at providing code for PHP, ASP and of course Coldfusion. Good because the code works.
DW8 in particular has also made great strides toward accessibility and W3C standardisation for the DW user. Creating a new html document in whatever DOCTYPE actually validates. So well done Macromedia (and hopefully Adobe).
So why do I mention this when the thread was about a CSS editor?
I beleive that a designer/developer that is serious about their trade should use the best tools available to them. As far as I know, there is no better program than Photoshop if you want to be a graphic designer. In fact, I have never heard a graphic designer say "Paint - that's my program of choice." In the same way, I'm always surprised at the "give me Notepad and I'll give you the world" mentality.
Hand-coding (X)HTML in Notepad, writing CSS in Notepad, using a command line interface to create SQL is absolutely stupid. Get with the times guys.
Now before I get killed for this I'm not saying that DW or any other editor is an excuse for not knowing how to code. If I was saying that I'd be suggesting Word. What I am saying is that there are excellent programs out there that can help us do our job quicker, better and more efficiently. Please use them. And if the argument is that the program is too expensive...

A couple of you seem to think this is about a CSS editor, but the topic plainly says, "best XHTML CSS Editor". CSS isn't only used with XHTML and XHTML isn't only used with CSS, so I would have to assume the issue is about both -- and more. Dreamweaver does both and more. So will a number of others. I have DW8, TopStyle3, NoteTab Pro and, of course, NotePad. I have tried a few others as well. Then I found WeBuilder 2005. I like DW, but it's entirely too slow. I like TopStyle3 too, but it doesn't do everything I need. WeBuilder does. And it's cheaper than TopStyle and DW. There's a trial version. Check it out.

I agree this should be moved to Software sorry for posting here without thinking!
I do like Dreamweaver, though its a heavier program. I like that it does the syntax highlighting and you can manage all your sites/pages easily.
Though I prefer lightweight software, I used to like notepad but who uses that anymore? EditPad Light is 100x the replacement, tabbed windows of multiple files, tons of features for free. The GUI is very nice and not ugly at all.
I like TopStyle not because I need a CSS editor, but because reading it is so convenient. It organizes all your IDs and Classes into a separate selector to jump from each one and I am a perfectionist, so checking errors within the program is a nice feature![]()

Dreamweaver's code editor is fabulous.

I'm pretty hardcore Dreamweaver (especially 8 with background FTP) but I have been using TextMate a good bit as of late for Ruby stuff.

Hand coding in Editplus, at a cost of $29 and I'll blow away any of you folks speed wise (and quality) ....

EditPlus is ghetto
Well the soul purpose I say that is because: http://www.editplus.com/ss/editplus.gif
Probably is great though, the full version.
http://www.pspad.com/en/ << Check that out FREEWARE, built in FTP all the tools you need. The screenshots look like crap, but when you download it - its pretty cool.

I'd rather spend my $$ on textmate...
I've used editplus, and it's no faster than TextMate is on the mac, and TextMate seems to have alot of nifty things like bundles that editplus doesn't.

Sorry but EditPlus Rocks!Originally Posted by lostseed

TopStyle isn't an editor but an IDE, since it features things like code completion, and other helpful bits that make coding easier. EditPlus is a text editor not an IDE, since it doesn't offer those features to the extent that TopStyle does. Thus, its really like comparing apples to oranges, they serve two different tasks. IDE's are again helpful and make coding easier while a text editor just gives you the basics. IDE's usually then feature language specific features, like TopStyle, while EditPlus doesn't.

I have to be the token member to mention UltraEdit. Thank you for your time.
