How do you know when a language is "enterprise ready"

Are you far off the mark? No, I don't think so.

Enterprises are about business, and generating more business. I would go as far as saying that business lunches are more revelant - and productive, than the technical aspect of the architectural software behind the business.

Think about it. Those at the top don't use the software, it's those lower down the chain of command that use it, but it's not those that use the software that generate the business, in the greater part anyways - it's them who are high up the chain that generate new business, through assocciate. Ie, those business lunches for example, or something more liesurely, such as playing golf at the weekend.

What I'm wondering, there are thousands of scripts developed in PHP4 that do not work properly in PHP5. Hosting companies are stuck with PHP4 due to this reason (yes, they can offer PHP5 as well, but can't get rid of PHP4). These backward compatibility issues have already damaged the reputation of PHP it seems.

How many of the current PHP frameworks will fade away the coming years? What if a php update breaks the framework. Big problems! In my opinion the PHP community should really start working on 1 framework and stop developing dozens of different frameworks which will not be supported anymore in 2 years time.

As long as PHP4 will be supported (security updates) there is no real problem, but what when a security issue is discovered after PHP4 support has been discontinued (how far away are we from this situation) ?

From wikipedia :

So one could never deploy enterprise business solutions with only one single tool or language so the question on when to "know" a language is enterprise ready, is irrelevant imho, refraise it to "which language is enterprise ready" after that your could ask "WHY" but knowing when is not important in enterprise development sinds they already know, simple as that no ?

Awww. IMO, that does make a very good response. Whatever the source, it remains a reasonable definition and the argument is logically sound. I'm not saying that it absolutely nails it in anyway, but to paraphrase -- just because its on wikipedia, doesn't mean that it is false.

Who was he?

A genius. Perhaps the most influential philosopher of the 20th century. Made monumental contributions to the philosophy of language and logic. Google should be littered with references. His Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus is a masterpiece and contains the famous quote: "whereof one can not speak, thereof one must remain silent."

Spent a large part of his career trying to define what it is to know something and relatedly, what it means to be certain of something.
