Website redesigns, who takes the credit?

A client of mine recently asked me to give his site a revamp to make it a little more exciting, it was originally made by another company.

The websites colors will remain the name, about 20% of the graphics will be reused (article headings and such), about 60% of the text will be reused and the layout will remain in a similar format with a bar down the side, header up the top, links across the top etc...

Now the question is, who gets the credit for designing the website? me? or the company who my revamped design is based off?

My answer is: It doesn't matter.

If you want to refer to your work for portfolio purposes, explain that you redesigned the site using a few elements from the previous design.

Who are you anticipating to explain this to?

Actually, both. Id like to put a "Website designed by..." on the bottom of the website AND in my Portfolio.

If there was a link to the previous firm, I would remove it if I were doing a redesign. I don't typically link back to my site, but there'd be nothing wront with it. You could put something generic like "Site by XYZ Design" instead of "designed by"

Who owns the copyright to the original design, the client or the previous firm? If it's the previous firm, then not only will you have a problem claiming the design as your own, but you really don't have the right to alter it either.
