most secure PHP method to store data in database?

I post this here because I am really asking a PHP quesiton more than a db question.

I use PEAR DB for data manipulation, PHP version 4.38, and MySQL 3.23.

What I'd like to know is how I can encrypt the data going in to the db and decrypt it most securely.

By secure, I mean that if someone accessed the database and PHP files, they would still not be able to figure out, or have difficulty doing so, the database contents.

Any ideas or methodologies with examples, if you have one, are MUCH appreciated!

    mcrypt

You could use mcrypt to both encrypt and decrypt the data. As to protecting the PHP files, I think that would require a server security approach.
