    Whats the advantage of subdomains

    Hi everyone

I now have my php/mysql poweres site up and running. I now want to add a new section for current news as opposed to long articles(which is what the site was designed for). What I want to know is what is the advantage(if any) of adding a subdomain to handle the news section rather than simply adding a new section the the existing site.

I think a subdomain is completely un-necessary, it would be treated as a separate site by google/other search engines (not 100& sure on that though) and could also lead to more complications depending on your host setup etc.

    Just do

    domain.dom/news etc

One of the uses is that a sub domain can be on a seperate server at a different location. I'm sure you must be able to see how useful that might be.

Yes, but in this case quite clearly that was not the reason he was looking at using a sub-domain.
