    encrypting passwords in mysql

    I want to set up a user table in my database that contains username and password so that when user logs into my web page I can check to see if their username and password is valid and if it is they are allowed access to other parts of my site.
    I found that the password can be sent to the database table in a query using PASSWORD ("password") and I'm not sure but this may encrypt it in some way??? If it does do something to the password variable can the password the user enters on subsequent logins be compared to this value in table.

    Thanks.

    yes it can be compared on future logons, when you insert the data

    Password = PASSWORD('$pass')

    that will encrypt it when you add it to the db
