How am I notified of a chargeback?

My company is setting up a site, using Verisign's Payflo Pro as our gateway. The documentation's great and the implementation's pretty straight-forward. The only question I have, is about chargebacks. When one occurs, how do I, or more specifically, my code, find out? There doesn't appear to be an interface, which Verisign calls, to notify me. Do I have to inquire about transactions, 30 days after settlement, to see if there was a chargeback? Thanks.

That would be through the merchant bank, I believe. Verisign doesn't get called when the customer does a chargeback - the processing bank does. Your merchant provider probably has some policy on notifications of chargebacks. Ours has a nice online interface where we can dispute and see the status of chargebacks... we also get an email and paper mail each time we get a chargeback.

I know my gateway knows nothing about chargebacks. Visa/MC chargebacks get to me through my merchant account provider, Amex and Discover come directly from them. When I get a Visa or MasterCard chargeback, CDGCommerce sends me an automatic e-mail and I can view it online, but a paper version arrives in the mail shortly after.

Most MAPs (merchant account providers provide an online tool that you can sing into & check your history, etc. Check with your MAP to see if they offer this. Most will also send out a letter to you as well to officially notify you.

The sooner you respond though to this inquiry, the better.
