    phpBB vs XMB

    Hi all,

I'm thinking of putting a new PHP and mySQL based forum on my site and was wondering which, in your opinion is the best one? I have looked at phpBB (www.phpbb.com), XMB (www.xmb.com) and IkonBoard (CGI based as far as I know).

I was just wondering how phpBB compares with XMB as regards features, security etc etc. I do not have the option of paying for the forum so vBulletin is out of the question. I would appreciate any opinions as I'm unsure as to which one to implement.

    Thanks,

never used xmb, but you can use phpbb, I've always worked with this (is better then ikonboard) and I don't think that many will disagree if I say that it's the best free forum out there...

i personally prefer XMB above all (except vbulletin)

it is a recent development, however i know the founders/developers are working on polls, templates and a lot more

as for phpbb, well it is kindof lacking in features - ifroggy should have a good opinion on this, as i know he runs a phpbb site, and owns xmbhacks.com (and posts at the xmb forum a lot)

ikonboard - well, its ok - version 3 will be a huge improvement. A lot of the features i have suggested have worked their way into it (since i know one of the admins there)

in short, go with xmb - if you dont like that (admin is slightly lacking) then go with ikonboard

I've been watching OpenBB very carefully over the past few weeks and it looks great.

Beta1 is coming out this week sometime, but they have a copy of it running on their site at Iansoft.net if you want to check it out. They are still working on the admin interface, but the word is that Beta1 will be out in a matter of days. It's free too, which is pretty nice considering how high-quality it is.

I say go with OpenBB or if you dont like it, then go with xmb...phpbb to me seems kind of half-assed i heard it has lots of security problems...might be wrong though

I can't speak to XMB, but I have been running phpBB for several months and have been impressed with the software (even I can get it to run) and the quality of their support forum www.phpBB.com

However, competition is good, glad to see some new boards starting.
