Website refresh on someone elses servers

    Hello,

We are currently quoting on a job to refresh a site that sits with another hosting provider. Usually we would host sites on our boxes so we can have complete control during developement etc. Although the client wishes to remain with the hosting provider they have ask for features that require software to be installed on the server. Has anyone had any diffculty dealing with a hosting provider on the clients behalf ? How do we gain access to the account without having to relay through the client for everthing ?

The client would have to give explicit instructions to their hosting provider to allow you to act on their behalf. In regards to installing software on the server, depending on what you mean by software, and depending on whether it is a shared hosting environment or an exclusive server, the host may not allow you to install the software. For instance many web hosts will not allow custom ISAPI filters to be installed on shared Windows boxes.

I've worked with many other hosting companies when it comes to client sites. Usually, the host requires confirmation from the Client that you have permission to access their server before giving you any information. It's easier if the Client provides you with the information you need, but if you need to contact the host directly, you can do that as well. Just be prepared to be asked questions and the host probably contacting the Client first to confirm.

As for the installation, like KLB stated, it's going to depend on what you're wanting to install. Many hosts have strict guidelines on what you can install on a server (epsecially if it's a shared server). If your Client has a dedicated server, you'll have a better chance at them letting you install it. If the host won't let you (and it's necessary for the site to work) then you just need to inform your Client that the software needed cannot run on that host. This is actually beneficial sometimes since it can convince the Client to host with you instead. If they want the features provided by the software, they need to move to a server that allows it.
