help getting php to run on apache

Im completely new to this, so hopefully you can understand my question.

Im trying to run an apache server on my computer that has PHP capability so I can start building a php site. Ive installed everything and followed the tutorials, but when I try to run my first php file on http:/localhost/test.html it only runs the html part of the source code and ignores everything between <? ... ?>. When im actually running Apache it says on the bottom:
    "Apache/2.0.55 (Win 32) PHP/5.0.3"
So I think its running php capability. Im also running this on Windows XP.

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

If you're running a php program, the file name cant be test.html.
Rename it to test.php and try again.

I thought you could have html and php code interchangebly in the same file as long as you put <?PHP ?> around it...
