How do I customize 404 error on VIRTUAL hosting account?

Yes, I know. Everyone should own their own server so they can customize their 404 pages. I can't convince one of my clients to leave his cheap virtual hosting account and his ISP says they "can't" change the 404 on a virtual account. Is there any alternative or something else I can request from the hosting company?

    Thanks in advance.

    if you can edit vhosts.conf

    within <VirtualHost> or <Directory> tag:
    Code:
    #"404 Not Found"
    ErrorDocument 404 /error_document_404.html
If your hosting server has AllowOverride enabled, so you can override some options using .htaccess files, add the same thing in a .htaccess file.

If your host is running CPanel you should be able to set up custom 404 pages right from there! (really easy too)

Is .htaccess disabled? If not you can do something like this:
    Code:
    ErrorDocument 404 /notfound.php
It's always worked for me under shared hosting accounts.
