    Contest suggestions?

Hey guys, I have a good forums site up at ChatGroove.com with a good member contingent, but keeping people posting actively is tough. I'd like to offer good contests to help increase activity, but I am short on ideas. What kind of contests would you guys think would help the community?

If you are simply looking for a contest that will keep posting activity high, then your solution is probably a posting contest. This will be temporary thought, or at least this is the case for most contests. If the prize is attractive enough, you will see lots of participation which will mean lots of posts.

Other contests...referral (highly recommend AGAINST them), article, review, "member of the week/month", and so on...There are a lot of ideas out there, but if your goal is to increase activity, I recommend a posting contest.

If you can afford it, I would say an iPod. Almost everyone could use one if they don't have one already.

Hm...seems like I would need a LOT of people actively competing in that contest to make an iPod be a prize. Otherwise would be a waste of money.

Hi, I run contests on my forums, these include a Member of the Month Contest and a new Songwriting Contest. We have also ran them in the past, they are great for keeping members interested and gives them something to participate in. We are lucky to have a good sponsor and can offer some very nice prizes. We also offer our own free t-shirts as well which work as their own promotional outlet.

You also need to promote the contest at places like ContestAlley etc and create a newsletter which I will create today for our new contest....

If you are going to offer something like* an iPod, I would offer a cash alternative also - cash at slightly less value than the product...In other words, if your product costs $100, tell them they can also take $85 cash if they choose.

Other rewards...your forums are very general, so you could really offer anything

    DVD
    CD
    Software
    Game
    Hosting
    Domain
    Forum License
    Template
    Advertising space on your forums
    Magazine Subscription
Forum Privileges (special group, color, title, etc)

and so on...I've always liked when people offer options for rewards. "You get to choose this, this, or this" - more people will participate if you give them more options

Yes, I would suggest you simply offer a $20-$50 game title on a popular platform.

I advise against a posting contest, I think they will bring you only temporary results unless you hold a contest every month or so.

    Heres a different suggestion...

Post on your forum asking for prize ideas, that alone should get your forum buzzing!

Pretty good ideas. Any ideas for getting a contest like this out in the open? Where to advertise it?

Advertise in as many forums as you can (where allowed!!) - that is where you'll get the most, free traffic.

Just be sure not to post anywhere you're not allowed

On ChristianIndieForums.com, I've got a "make me a banner" contest going. I laid out a few rules for the banner explaining what I wanted and am going to let members choose a winner from those submitted. I'm offering a $20 gift certificate/card to the winning member good at the store/website of their choice. The contest isn't quite as popular as I'd hoped, but it does seem to be gaining a bit more interest among members.

My suggestion to grow the amount of posts is to merge some of your folders. If you consolidated a few your forum would look more active, and thus cause an increase in posts.

    This is what we did...

We did a viral emailing campaign. We got the idea from the Small World Phenomenon. I think there are fundamental rules you have to look at psychologically to draw people in (eg. Curiosity, Controversy, Prizes, Gossip, etc) the fun thing is that it's okay if it doesn't work all the time. We're racking our brains everyday to think of how to draw the crowds in a big way. Word of mouth is the best way when you have no budget. I promise to share the secret when we finally crack the code. I think it has to be fun and make the customers feel appreciated. Our parent company has a motto that goes "We don't need to reinvent the wheel, just paint it red so it stands out".
Anyhow below is a link to a post on our site that contains a word document of a competition we did. Please feel free to contact us for collaborations.

It pulled us up 1 million places according to Alexa and we've only been online for a month!

    Be good.

We are runing a gift card promotion in our online mall. We give free promotion space to a community member and they put up the gift code to one lucky registrant. It's increased our newsletter base in sign ups and makes the shop owner happy with all the front page traffic and free newsletter space. Maybe you have forum members that would like to be promoted in your forum and people would enter by reffering a new member? Just an idea. Hope it helps.

Make sure to put them to good use xD
I have only one suggestion and I've mentioned this to you on MSN awhile ago, merge the forums with the least amount of activity and merge them with the bigger ones.

By merge I mean to make the smaller one a sub-category (sub-forum) in the bigger one.

    Good luck

luckily they are all getting good activity though. I really don't have any need to merge right now.

I think that a posting contest is really good like what other people have said before. If you cannot afford to make an IPOD a prize option, the prize should be cash ranging $25.00-$50.00. Just my opinion, it could be good.

Yeah, that's the one I was considering most heavily, some kind of posting contest. Referral contests would get tricky with cheating.

    Thanks for all your suggestions.
