URL redirection
Hi.
I have a domain name that is hosted for me. It was free from freenetname ages ago, and can't modify the DNS records.
At the moment i use a 1 pixel high frameset to redirect it to my paid for webspace, but wonder if there is any better way of doing this, as it can be a little slow or unreliable?
For example some web forwarding programs use invisible frames...I swear to drunk I'm not God.

Netzero had a similar service. They gave their clients the option of buying the name back. Maybe your service gives you the same option?

yeh they do. The princely sum of £94.
I'm not paying that! I'll stick with my frameset and wait until it is released so i can re-register it!
There must be a better way than the frameset option!?I swear to drunk I'm not God.

what you could do is create a default file at the location of your registered name that contains a link to your new site. In the header of this file add a meta tag:
<META HTTP-EQUIV="refresh" CONTENT="0;url=yourPage.html">
For most browsers, this will instantly redirect them to your new site. For browsers that don't support this, they can get to your site via the link that you provide. The obvious downside to this is that they won't see your registered URL in the address bar.

You have to be careful though because some search engines won't index your site if you are redirecting. A JS redirect would be a better solution.
<SCRIPT Language="JavaScript">
window.location.href="http://www.yourdomain.com";
</SCRIPT>

Yes I know I could do that (in fact location.replace works better) but I want to maintain the domain name in the address bar...
