problem in sending mail through php

I am a new bie in php.I have running php-apache-mysql trio on a linux server which has sendmail installed within it.I am working on a nt m/c and accessing this linux server through saamba services.while trying to use mail function from my php code it shows that mail function succeeds but the mail doesn't reaches the recipeint.i have also tried changing my seettings in php.ini by seeting the smtp_path and other alternative too.
the mails which i sent from here reaches the linux server after about 4 or 5 days and is found in a file "/var/spool/mail/root".where it shows that the mail cannot be dispatched and is delayed along with errors like "name server timeout".The receipient address is mentioned and said to be fatal along with some header information and mime type.please help me in this regard..

hi, could you post the code used to send the email?
i suspect any problems to be related to your headers being sent out.
