PHP forums - iKonboard vs. vBulletin

I am at a turning point with my website, and I'm either going to upgrade to the MySQL version of iB3 or vB. I am currently running iB 2.1.8. Which one does everyone here recommend?

    Hey - I own PHPForums.com!

iKB is PHP? I didn't know that. But, vB is better. If you can't afford vB, then go with iKB.

    vB All the Way!

In the interest of full disclosure, it should be stated here that the user posting this message is a moderator and vBulletin.com/forum and probably has a slightly skewed view of which product to use

iKonboard is perl indeed, but this board rules, check out:
    http://forums.ikonboard.com/ikonboard.cgi

The lay out of this board is much better than the support forums of vB, of course, lay out doesn't say anything of the board itself.
About the board, well, iKonboard is free! That's a very important detail I think.
I've installed this board before, of course it's not as easy as vB (php), but for a perl board, it's was not that difficult to get it running.

I would recommend everybody to test this board before your spend money on vBulletin!

I would go with vBulletin simply because it is PHP based.

BTW I edited the thread title seen as you made a mistake with it.

My logic being that PHP is generally less resource intensive than Perl, perl pays a price for it's flexability, it's slower than more compact languages and hence uses more resources - Which is why some hosts have taken the extreme measure of banning forums such as UBB from being hosted with them.

    ikonboard or VB ??

just like others .. if you can BUY VB .. then go to VB .. if not ikonboard is the other choice (i dont think phpBB suite you ... maybe xmb can ?? (xmbforum.com))

hey! i know one of the ikonboard developers ... he said that the new version (ikb3??) is not the real one. they will release up the new version where the most stable version of their ikonboard ...

i dont know .. but i heard they talking about MySQL (perl can do MySQL too!).

but i think VB is the best choice

Ok - first of all Ikonboard doesn't use PHP or mySQL. Ikonboard is written in Perl and stores all of it's data in flat text files. This is good in that it means it can be installed on virtually any host that supports perl (you don't need a mySQL database server as well) but it also means that performance won't be as good. That said, ikonboard performance should be absolutely fine for any forum that doesn't have dozens of members online and accessing the forums at the same time.

As free forums go Ikonboard is great - however it doesn't have the power, flexibility or performance of vBulletin. You get what you pay for

The final release of version 3 will be able to use MySQL, but it will still be slower than using PHP as you have to go through the DBI module.

vB if you can afford it. I think ikonboard is the best non-vB forum out there.

why PHP over Perl? PHP 4 (module) will SO kill anything in Perl (through CGI)! since most all hosts run PHP as a module and Perl though CGI, a PHP script will be done running before the Perl one even starts. and when you get to PHP w/ MySQL vs Perl w/ flat files, there's no comparison...

as for which board - i'll be writing my own of course. in PHP/MySQL. that way i can customize it exactly how i want.

If you can't afford vB, go with PhpBB. The reason why I'd choose PhpBB over iKB anytime is the very easy customisation of the PHP code. Perl just isn't as flexible. And Perl with flat files is desperately sloooooooooow

Thanks for all the comments, everyone. I appreciate it.

But, simply going by personal preference, which software would you enjoy using more?

    I would enjoy vB

But PhpBB v2.0 will surely be cool too, with its innovative template system !
And v1.4 is still very fast, and a good vB replacement for free (aka for me)

I would go with vB if you can possibly afford it. iB is good, but IMO nothng comes close to vB (well, not very close).

Please also bear in mind that, like Tubedogg, I have an incredibly biased view when discussing vBulletin
