    Netscape 6.1 Finally Released!

Netscape 6.1 has finally been released.

It's apparently much more stable than its shoddy predecessors, and much faster as well. As web developers, we need to be kept apprised of these things.

Who knows, perhaps this will bring Netscape back some much needed market share? Anyway, I thought it prudent to let everybody know.

    Go download your copy:

Netscape 6.1 is just an old Mozilla release with a lot of proprietary Netscape junk, so I doubt it will bring them much more market share.

It will probably come on the disk in my monthly subscription of Internet magazines so I will definitely be installing it then. Maybe the first person who intalls and tries it could write a review for the Community Crier?

Nicky -- I'd be willing to do that I think.

I'm downloading it as we speak.

I downloaded this on the day it was released. I can well say that the performance and stability has greatly improved from version 6, infact as much as I tried I couldn't get v6.1 to crash once.

I've noticed that Netscape 6.1 (windows) has a new feature called 'Quick Launch', which speeds launch times by preloading the key components of Netscape 6.1 during the windows bootup process.

I knew that Netscape/AOL wouldn't be long to release v6.1 out of beta as IE6 is going to be released wednesday. But still, if you're even a little curious about finding another alternative to IE, Netscape 6.1 is finally worth a try. Personally, I am sticking to Mozilla either way.

But really, Netscape 6.1 is just based on Mozilla 0.9.2, with patches, and Mozilla 0.9.3. has already been released, and there were optimisations and bug fixes since.

I'm definitely using Mozilla 0.93 as well. But you all need to give Netscape some credit at least! They are, after all, fixing their problems....

Well, actually the majority of developers working on Mozilla are Netscape engineers.

Actually, most of them are still Netscape engineers. Sure there are a few high profile guys like Chris Blizzard, who's from Red Hat (and therefore has a vested interest that Mozilla succeeds) but most of the people working on Mozilla are from Netscape.

Well most people would have thought otherwise, especially after that AOL takeover fiasco.

I know otherwise only because I'm an active lurker on MozillaZine and the various Mozilla newsgroups.

I hate to keep disagreeing with you, but IMO Mike Angelo's articles are misinformed pieces of trash.

He can't get basic facts straight.

    Take this line:
"Here, however, we believe that the Mozilla 0.9.2.1 Milestone source is very close to the Netscape 6.1 code."

The problem? Netscape 6.1 is the 0.9.2.1 source code with extra plugins, bundled applications and some branding. This piece of information is freely available, and is on the front page of Mozilla.org itself. It was never a secret. Great "investigative" journalism there.

How about this line in the side bar:
"Corre´s false claim that these two sections are "pure speculation" is tantamount to her denying that Netscape 6.1 is based upon Mozilla code!"

I can't figure out how he could come to this conclusion from the following statement by a Netscape spokesperson: "Not only is this not correct, it's pure speculation! We released Netscape 6.1 on target as we had announced we would, and never announced plans for NS6.1 PR2." He is putting words into her mouth.

And how about "conspiracy" surrounding the 0.9.2.1 "Milestone"? It is not a milestone in the first place.

Not to mention the atrocious English and site design.

    How very interesting....

It does say in the top of the article that much of the information is hypothetical.

I'm not understanding the whole 6.1 memory problems though. I did a review -- and my memory usage went up like 10 megs maximum -- sometimes not even that.

And I only have Windows98SE and 128 megs of RAM.

Well, he is hypothesizing on known facts, and getting them wrong. That's like knowing what the questions in a test would be beforehand and still manage to flunk.

I've not even started on his strange fixation with the number of "bugs" yet.

A little background, the Mozilla project classifies everything, spelling mistake, minor cosmetic errors, "nice to have" features etc. as bugs.

Yes -- it would have been nice had he expanded upon the whole bug issue -- 2900 did sound like a bit much.

Just saw this link over at MozillaZine: Some web design tips from the master Mike Angelo.

    http://www.intac.com/~aboutcmp/SiteDsgn.html

I got a kick out of it.
