    UBB vs. vBulletin

I'm currently using UBB 6, and am debating about changing. I wanted to see how many people are using each and to get some feedback on both.

    thanks

Go to http://www.vbulletin.com/forum and run a search for comparisons. Better yet, go to the Infopop Support Forums and do a search for "vBulletin". Then do the same for "UBB" on the vBulletin Support Forums. That show you the difference in performance?

    vBulletin is:

    - Cheaper
    - Faster
    - Feature-packed
    - Less server intensive, the reason so many hosts have banned UBB

Actually you can't search for UBB at the vBulletin.com site. They have the search engine set up for the default of four characters.

You can search for Ultimate though... You can also search for HTML as it would have the most results. You could do the same at the UBB support forum and see which one you like more.

Just make sure to search all forums. For added fun you can time them.

I would choose vB anyday over UBB.

UBB uses a flat file database system. Which is slower, and harder on the server. Which is why, as someone said, a lot of places have banned it. It might be able to use database backend now though, I quit following it a while ago...*shrug*

And I don't really like the direction UBB has been traveling lately. They have jacked up their prices a whole heckuva lot. Very pricey

UBB has also become very feature-bloated. I think they value features over speed :/

    Just my 1.5 cents...

    So which is it? heh

    UBB is:
    - Cheaper
    - Just as fast in most respects with the new betas that are coming out
    - Plenty of features and an excellent support site should you want to add more
    - Highly debateable concerning server load - most busy vB's require much more server hardware to run at all, let alone with blazing speed. Their "prize sites" run on 2 or more dedicated servers - you can factor that into your cost issues as well.

Yes, the search function on a ubb sucks, even tho it is much better (in current betas) than it was. What is more important to the end user? Lightening fast searches or a site they can understand how to use?

The user-interface for most vB's looks like a phone book, way too complicated for the new-to-average web user - wayne has done a nice job here to help but it still has a long ways to go to reach the refinement of a UBB.

You are asking this question at a forum mostly run by vB moderators, hardly an un-biased opinion here.

Actually we ran UBB 5.47 for over a year here. When we converted to vBulletin, user participation increased 3 fold.

When we were using UBB we had to prune messages every three months to keep it running on this same server. Once the messages got over 20,000 it would start locking up.

When we converted from UBB to vBulletin on August 24th, 2000, we had less than 3,000 members. And had an average of 20 people online at at time.

I am familiar with both pieces of software. Have used both pieces of software and will stick with vBulletin.

I have used both, and to be honest with you VB is far easier and better to use, I love the database support, much faster, and tider than having a load of html files on your server.
