I'd recommend MySQL by Paul Dubois (2nd Edition), really thats all you need for mysql.

As for general database design, a book i found really good for grasping concepts is Database Design for Mere Mortals. It really cuts through all the jargon and teaches you step by step.

If you really want to learn some fundamentals on database design, get the book by C.J. Date on the subject.
    I once had a problem.
I thought: "Oh, I know: I'll just use XML!"
    Now I had two problems.

I wish somebody would write a book on database design and web applications (preferably in php / mysql). I'm always amazed at the number of tricks in iterating through rows etc... or differnet sql caching tricks.

Does anybody know a book like that? no description of what a primary key or index but really sophisticated tricks.

Thanks! The "technical" theory is what I'm looking for.
