I think it *might* work on traffic.. I know our sites have appeared on it, only to drop off..

I could be wrong, though. Could have just been a miracle.

Well I know yahoo tracks every click, but I dont know how they compile the results

    1. is the counter ever reset?

    2. do they count clicks from search results for the most popular tallys?

    3. do they count clicks from the most popular listings or just from the main listings in the tallys?

No one except for Yahoo would be able to give you a definite answer but from what I have seen it takes clicks on a site from that category and when enough have been made which is anyone?s guess it'll then move you up to the most popular section.

I'm sure they have some type of tracking in place to make sure people don't repeatedly click on their site and get it up to the most popular but clicking your own link now and again is a good idea in my opinion.

I know that when Spider-Food.net dropped out of the most popular section
the forum users including myself gave a few clicks to it now and then and it was soon reinstated to the most popular area shortly after.

    Hey Boss,

They are measuring clicks. That is what we were able to figure out in our little test. But the answer does go farther than that.

Clicks are just one part of the equasion it seems - and Yahoo aint tellin' the other. They are either pulling info from another source or their Editors are making some calls that are being factored in. Perhaps it is a combination of the two.

That would mean it is based on possibly:

    clicks
    Editors choice
    other source

One thing that is interesting is that when you mouse over a link in the "Most Popular" category the link you will see displayed in the bottom of your browser is exactly the same link you will see if you find your site listed farther down.

The reason I say this is that for those engines that do track clicks you can usually spot this click tracking in the link. But on Yahoo, the link for a site listed in the "Most Popular" section is no different than the link for the same site listed farther down the list.

I am not sure how they are working all this together - but it does not seem logical (IMHO) for them to count clicks that origionate from the Most Popular section. If they did, how would other sites ever rise to the top?

Yet, on Yahoo - if I am reading things right - they do not differentiate between clicks.

Anyway - this is a great topic for someone to research. 'Perhaps we can all compare our notes here and crack this puppy!

My thoughts exactly. The popular get more popular and a newer site can never rise to be "king of the mountain"

Has anyone emailed yahoo and asked about this?

We were always a most popular site till 2-days ago when they switched us automatically to a different category.

    We'll be back!
