Dont just submit your site

Every day I usually find 1 new site that links to mine by looking through my logs. I submit each URL to Google. Why do I do this? Well Google ranks pages based on links pointing to them, and if Google doesn't know about the link then it doesn't help me any.

So make sure that you not only submit your site, but also submit the sites of those linking to you. I personally get alot of teachers linking to me from their online syllabi, such pages would never be found unless I submitted them.

Good tip Aspen. I've also heard that you want to get people finding your site through the Google search bar as that gives you a higher ranking in popularity.

That's a very smart thing to do.


The only problem can be that one could submit his/her site
the same day someone linked from that site submits it as well.


When sites are listed in directories like Dmoz and Looksmart
they have pages that link to you but many sites use that information and
also link to you. Getting those pages indexed is a good idea as well.

Goto has banned this practice of submitting URLs that you don't own. Be careful as you do this, as other search engines may follow...

I hope Aspen means he only submits the site if it is not already in Google - I'm sure he does and I want to underline that - re-submitting someone's site when it is already in is not 'the done thing'.

oh sure, I can tell if it's in google or not by the page rank, but Google doesn't have any spam fighting techniques, they don't care how often you submit, so it doesn't matter

As for Goto... seeing as how thats a paid engine it makes sense for them not to let someone submit a url they dont own. Someone could submit a competitors site and then bid low with it and put on a bad description and then that competitor would not be able to submit his own site to goto.

One thing I would like to add about link pop - in Google and else where. Your link pop is not counted in only in number of links - but in the number of Quality and Relevant links you have. There are pleanty of highly placed (for competitive terms) sites that have a low link count. Why? Their links are Very relevant and from sites that are considered important. For example, if I have a site about, ohh Search Engine Optimization.. a link from a site all about Tires or Cars would do nothing for me. But a link from about.com's seo section - or Search Engine World, etc.. would get me dancing around my office

Getting links to your site is a very important thing to do.
Although I don't like se's basing rankings on link popularity
it is true that some are starting to look at it.

Google would be the se that looks at this the closest at
this time.

Getting a link to your site from a wildly popular site can be
hard. You have to think why would they want to link to you and send
their traffic out.

With that said don't worry because although you'll find many sites
that don't want to link to you there will be those that will.

No one except for those at the SE's can tell you exactly how they rank pages but with a balanced approach to SEO you'll be on your way to high rankings in no time. This balanced approach should contain link popularity building.

Concentrate on the 3 keys, the title, both metas (keywords and description) and the page content. The title is most important followed by the page content and lastly the metas.

Many SE?s do still look at the Meta description while others take the first few lines of page content and use that as the description. The Meta keywords tag is always good to have.

When I search for things I usually only look at the title as I'm sure many others do too.

You don't only want to rank high but you also want to entice the searcher to click. Keep that in mind when writing your copy.

A friend of mine uses a term I like, that I explains SEO perfectly "easy peasy". Take some time read up and do it. It's not hard but it will take time.

Google has ways to fight cloaking, redirection, and people who try to put text the same color as the bgcolor etc.

But they've said time and again that you cannot get punished for submitting your site no matter how often you do it.
