I know that some search engines might ban a site for using meta-redirects, but what about setting the redirect up in your .htaccess file? Is this the way to go?

If the response code returned is not 200, for example if it is 301 Moved Permanently, then it is the same. Search engines will not want to index a site that returns a 301 or other redirect.
Also, if the Location: response is different than the URL part of the request, then search engines also consider it a redirection, I think.
