myLinks
I have a very simple question for you all, what features would you like to see in a links portal?
I've got a list of things that I feel would be good to start with, which i'll list below, i'd be interested in getting your opinion on these features and any ideas that you might have for extra features.
here is what I've got so far:
- Searchable via keywords
- browasable via category
- link rating system
- mailing list support
- New/Updated notification
- etc...
thank youDaniel Hollands

I'm sure it's obvious - but a place to add links...?
Also a seperation between commercial and non-commercial sites.
To explain: I have recently been looking for a place online to practice my french, improve my grammer etc. Searches frequently produce pages that have obviously paid for engine placement - and ask you to pay for their service. Knowing that the same material is available for free, I have to scour for hours until I come across a good non-commercial site. So, using your rating system, and the ability to discern between commercial and non-commercial, a search through your portal (regardless of subject area) could be a richer experience

I'd rather not see one at all!
Hi
I think the web has more than enough link portals and the chances of a one man operation (educated guess)providing anything more useful than that which is already established is minimal to say the least.
I think the web lacks high quality specialty portals though and the value there is much more.
I recently found a buffy portal for example, that's the kind of thing that takes my interest.
Good luck what ever you do though

TheOriginalH - Good idea, I'll have to see if I can add that.
nwilson - All i'll be doing is writing the script, it will then be up to whoever uses it to worry about the contentI do understand your concirn though.
I would have posted this in the PHP forum, but as it's features information that I want, and not how to build them, i decided to post hereDaniel Hollands

Oh, one more thing, once it's written, i'll possably use a copy on my own site which is dealing with the paranormal, this feels like quite a specialist area if you ask me
although the buffy portal sounds good, do you have the URL, my sister would love to see it

Howdy!
I agree that a rating system is nice, but I'm wondering what it's going to be based on... Will you be rating each link, or will click-through or some metric be used to show ratings?
GOOD LUCK!

The rating will be provided by the users of the site, typical 1-10 with 10 being the best. the users just select the rating, hit go and the site does the rest.
The rating boxes for each link within the database will be available within the listing pages of th directory, but there will also an option of placing some rating code on a site that is listed, if you know what I mean
Oh, i'be came up with another idea, owner reviews, and the ability to have a link listed in more than one category.Daniel Hollands

Personally I'm looking for a good set of categories...proper reviews for each page. A rating system that reflects the thoughts of both the team behind the site and its audience.

Well, like I said before, I'll only be writing the software, it will be up to the owners of the site to ensure that all that information is provided, however I am sure that I can make sure that the websites have the tools available to them for this
so along side the user rating system we could have a comments system, not a problemDaniel Hollands
