If the Ruby forum becomes popular I promise not to let it become a world unto itself like the advanced PHP forum has become

Very ironic. People were just talking about wanting once. I guess it really happened.

I am so tempted to make a smart-alec remark but in honesty, I hope all the rubyists here make a great success of this new forum. Congrats and share the knowledge. Best Regards.

I've been coding in PHP for just about seven years now. Believeme when I tell you: you are going to love Ruby enought to switch completelly. Specially if you get started by checking rubyonrails.com out.

    Good move. Thanks.

It's about time ruby had a decent forum / gathering place for discuss issues. It's one thing I think Ruby needs in order to deal with the number of ruby newbies that have come in the last year with the advent of things such as RoR. Certainly, I'm not one who is confortable doing everything on IRC chat.

Why not? IRC is much better than forums, if someone is asking stupid questions you can just kick them from the channel

IRC is even worse than forums (which are bad) at letting user contributed information slip away and creating a situation where people ask the same questions over and over again and the people with answers get tired of answering them.

Also, getting an answer on IRC is contingent on someone who has the answer paying attention when you ask it and still lacks the level of oversight available in a well-trafficked forum.

Sorry if my sarcasm radar is down, I just really agree with MiiJaySung's sentiment.

mmj, thanks for adding a Ruby section. This is really gonna help a lot of people.

I actually asked about a Ruby section about three months ago (here).

Thanks for listening to your members and for continuing to make SitePoint the best place for web masters!

Well, I'm just learning whilst actually working with Ruby & Rails, and this forum is a massive help!
It's true what the agile webdev book says about the ruby community -- v. friendly & v. helpful!
If not for the fact that the language wasn't inherently superior to any other language I know, I might still make the switch simply by comparing the attitudes in the ruby community against those found Java/JSF/Hibernate/Spring communities...
& I honestly have to wonder -- how did I keep track of all that stuff?!
    doug.
