Lycos, AltaVista listing problems

I have a good ranking in Google and I'm listed in the Yahoo! directory. I've submitted to AltaVista and Lycos several times, without success. What does AltaVista and Lycos look for in pages for listing? What can I do for these two engines to earn a high ranking?

AV and Lycos don't update that often, how long ago did you submit?

Also being in DMOZ helps with both engines.

I'm listed in DMOZ. (Sorry, I forgot to mention this.)

Word on the street is that sites are being dropped from AV like flies since they introduced their paid inclusion service, which might have something to do with it.

Does anyone know what AltaVista or Lycos look for when indexing the page? (Do they use META tags, HTML comments, look at the actual page text?)

I contacted AV about buying "Partner" listings for some keywords for my e-tail site. One of my competitors did it. I can't believe how much they asked for! The traffic isn't all that high on those words and more over I can't believe my competitor paid those prices as well!
