    Media Mentions

I thought I would share my first ever Media Mention.

My wilderness survival site got mentioned in U.S. News. It was in conjunction with that boy in FL getting attacked by a shark.

    Anyways
    http://www.usnews.com/usnews/nycu/tech/tebest.htm

    http://www.usnews.com/usnews/issue/0...ch/6webmap.htm

Mine is the first one listed.

There aren't very many good survival information sites out there, so I think this will be really good. Hopefully my site will be remembered next time there is a survival related story, or perhaps during next season's survivor.

I'm hoping that this one media mention will lead to more, has anyone ever noticed that happening?

I personaly would put something about this on your main index page, ie "As seen in USnews!"... If anything, this will give your site more credibility, and other media players will think "oh, its good enough for us news, its good enough for me!"

Let us know how this turns out, and how many unique visitors you get from them

I'm actually not sure if it'll be in the actual magazine or at their website only.

Its the issue for 8/6/01 and its a weekly magazine so I dont know if its actually on newstands yet.

But they group it up with all the rest of their stuff so I'd assume its in the actual magazine, I'll have to look for a copy.

Congratulations, I would see if they would let you post the full story on your site. Might help you get more coverage if another reporter comes to your site looking to write a story.

its not a story. Its a very small section. They did this write up on sites where you can find info on dangerous animals, they simply least each site with a short description. Mine is the first one on the list.

Apparently the issue isn't out yet and I'm already getting traffic from their website.

I'll have to keep checking newstands to see when it comes out. Its supposed to be the 8/6/01 issue.

Very cool - congratulations (nice site too btw!). We once got a write-up in Entertainment Weekly (brief little blurb with a letter grading the site), and were rewarded with a nice boost in traffic (and some happy members with another reason to feel special!). I suspect you'll be very pleased with the turnaround! Congrats again!

How do you experienced marketers feel about this - features, "what's hot on the web," stuff like that - are they as good tools as advertising or link exchanges for getting traffic? Is it important to make contacts with people at your local newspaper or TV station or whatever and try to get mentioned in something? Or is it better to stick to traditional methods?

    Congrats Aspen!
    That is really cool...

For some reason I keep finding websites of various SPF users in the magazine ".net" (which rules btw)

So far I found an entire leaflet dedicated to jokes from pbbt.com (Owen at SPF) and a WHOLE PAGE ARTICLE regarding homepagetools.com (Joel Moss here).

The article was about how to get a forum on your website, so I immediatly contacted Joel and scanned the article and sent it to him... Made me feel good

    Congrats to them both...

    delemtri,

if its free, and it hits a big audience, id be damn happy even if it only bought in a few hundred extra hits, for the simple reason that out of the millions of websites, mine was promoted, designed, talked about enough for somebody in the media to get hold of my URL, and not only did the get hold of it, they also advertised it... i mean thats a pretty big wrap in itself, throw in the extra trafic generated and what have you got to be upset about.
as to answer the second part, you may not get killer traffic from the whats hot section, but yu get scene, branding increases, id think it may even be fare to say that its possible you COULD potentially end up being able to icrease your rates, say to an advertiser... our site has been listed here, there and everywhere as being hot!
Sitepoint even mentions the mags ect that have mentioned sitepoint, so obviously there is somethng there.
