The new ad is certainly more creative, and I like a lot more. It didn't seem to open up in Opera at first, a little bit of UserJS was blocking it. Got rid of it because I had to see the cool ad. Very good job, beats the pop-up.

No biggie - but I'd still love to know how it's done if it's been discussed.

weren't the pop-ups using cookies to track the user preference, like if user closes the pop-up without clicking on any link, then the pop-up won't show for an X period of time, otherwise if a link in the popup is clicked, the pop-up is shown more frequently? I thought so, as sometimes when I opened SitePoint on another PC without a pop-up blocker, the pop-ups seemed to be less in number if I closed them rightaway without clicking the links, but when I clicked a link in the pop-up, they appeared a bit more frequently!!

No, I didn't mean to refer to a certain thread, its just that I linked to remind ya that we have a cool Javascript forum here with some cool people & I'm sure they'll help you create one if you ask for help!! This ad is no big deal, its just a layer, you'll find some scripts on Dynamic Drive that create an in-page DHTML Popup(with animation), you can modify them a bit to show ads!!
I think that Dan Grossman's PopinAds also uses same technique.

We've changed it over time, but never really like that. Generally it's been set to launch once a week unless you click 'dont show' link, which ices it for a year. If you haven't got cookies it doesn't lauch at all.

are you talking about pop-ups or the new pop-in(in page pop-ups) ads? I didn't see any "don't show link" on any pop-up, but then I don't usually see pop-ups, close them as soon as they open.

Hehehe,.. both actually. In fact, if you go to any book sales pages and click a 'Download sample' link, you'll launch exactly the same object manually. You'll see the three links at the bottom.

Like many others, I never go to the main page unless some thread like this says go to the main page and look at it for some particular reason.

With that said, from a visual standpoint I think the catfish is really cool. I particularly like the way the boxes/books stick ubove the rest of the ad giving it a non-square effect. I'm not sure what I would have thought about it if I had seen the ad without any fore knowleged that it was going to be there.

I would agree that it is much better than popups or even DHTML "popups" that obscure content. At least with the catfish, I can leave it alone and go about my business without it preventing me from accessing something.

Overall I give my vote for replacing popups with catfish.

I'll have to check them out. I usually only see articles posted by article bot. In reality, I just like chatting with folks in these forums. Lately I've been stuck in general chat, which isn't helping my post count any.

It's a simple CSS with a little JavaScript to make it go away. I'm sure anyone could figure out how to emulate it by simply looking at the source code.

I can't believe that people actually like those ads. It's the first time I visited the articles for a while, and I'm sorry to say it will be my last. There is now so much rubbish around the articles that it totally ruins them for me. I hate sites that are covered in adverts and popups, and now sitepoint has entered that category.

I might add that I bought around 150 worth of sitepoint books based on the content of the articles, but am unlikely to bother with any more as the constant popups and other ads just make it not worth the effort to read the articles.

You think that SitePoint has a lot of ads? Their ads are quite neatly tucket away, don't take forever to load, and aren't disturbing. Just click on the Don't Show Me Again link and never see it again! When I look at a developer website like DevShed I see falshing ads, banners, and unorganized content. I cannot even stand the poor quality.

I come to SitePoint and get great content, with minimal ads (with services I am interested in too). They're about as non-intrusive as you get.

well, if you think that SitePoint has a lot of ads & is disturbing, then I think that you haven't seen much yet!!
As I see it, there are 3 types of readers here on SitePoint, those who don't mind ads, those who mind them but find ways to avoid them & those who mind them and whine about them but don't do anything to avoid them!! Surely you don't belong to the first group!!
If you've problems reading articles, why not use the Print View? There are hardly any ads there!! And as for pop-ups, well, if you don't have a pop-up blocker on your browser, hardly you've got any right to complain then!!

Actually, I don't see why I should have to install software on my PC just so I can use a website. Quite frankly, the content of sitepoint can be obtained in other places. If a website is constructed in such a way that I have to use popup blockers, then I don't want to be at that website. I used to go to devshed regularly a few years ago, but now don't even bother with it simply because of the popups.

I do have a popup blocker, I have the one built into firefox, but it doesn't exactly do much good when the ads are stuck to the bottom of the browser with CSS. The web is big enough for me not to need to waste my time configuring things to work. I'll simply vote with my feet and move to a site that thinks usability is important.

I'm against popup blockers, myself. If you can't view the ads, don't view the site.

Once I've finished unsubscribing from all the crap that comes from sitepoint, that's exactly what I will be doing. Choosing never to view this site again.
