    security, encryption and e-mail

I would like to find out opinions and some direction for the following problem. I have to set up an online store that accepts creditcards. For security reasons I thought that the best way to handle the data was to encrypt it, using my public key and send it from the host to myself by e-mail. That way I avoid having the number stored on the server and it is transmitted securely. Can this be done with PHP? Is there a better way? I'm after ideas and opinions. Thanks

Thanks MPK. I have looked into worldpay and other similar systems. Unfortunately we are a relatively small business and can't afford the set-up cost (the NZ$ is very poor at the moment. It would cost us over NZ$1000) which is why we have opted for off line processing. I have started to investigate Paypal for our US customers and will probably use that, however we still need to be able to take payments in NZ$. Hopefully someone knows how to do it in PHP. I think it can be done in PERL, but I know nothing about it.

Thanks, that was exactly what I was looking for. Now I just have to try it and get it to work.
