I know people that have them. Sony keeps it's high quality -- so they're good. The only potential drawback is that they seem to have a higher price than many of the other notebook brands....

Actually, the ones I'm looking at are up to 50% cheaper than identically equipped PC's from Dell, Gateway, IBM and Compaq. That's why I'm wondering. I'm looking at an All-In-One Vaio that is a Pentium III/750 mHz, 15 GB hard drive, built in modem, built in 10/100 Ethernet NIC, 2 USB ports and a firewire port, 128 MB RAM, DVD, Win2k, 15" monitor Active-matrix, and it's only $1500. Put Office XP on it and I'm paying $1900. The same thing from Compaq runs $2700! So that's what I'm trying to figure out. What's the catch?

Are you serious? I've never seen them cheaper -- always higher in price. You should probably wait for a few more reviews before you make a final decision, but that's sounding like a very good deal.

    Edit: Now I'm wanting one....

I'll say that the three people I have know that have had Vaio's have loved them. They would EASILY make me want to get one just because some of them are better than my desktop computer. Bigger hard drives, more RAM, faster processors. What's not to like?

Plus the screens...OMG...the screens are un-freaking-believable.

creole is right. On all those accounts. That's why my friends used Sony I guess. I've just never seen them cheaper. I'm thinking you should go for it man! Or, if they're going that cheaply, boost up your funds a little more and go with TOP OF THE LINE. If the price proportion is the same, you can get a much better Sony than the one you're looking for, and overall it will have been a smarter investment because it will be faster and last longer.

I'm grinning so big right now Let me go find the link and let you guys in on it. Ironically, I found the model at Best Buy for $1400 loaded with WinME. Well, I don't want Windows Me and thats all a consumer oriented, AOL-loving, bells-and-whistle oriented, easily entertained society wants for consumer models. So I looked for the same model on the internet and finding it for $100 more with Win2k. Then I saw the MicroWarehouse catalog today and inside the front cover is the same model and I, ummm, misquoted the price...it's $1800 there, damn! oh well. well, let me go look for the link.

    yeah

Oh yeah the sony screens are so much better than anything it's not funny. The skinny range of vaios look choice and come with the memory stick port (might not ever be used though!).

I don't know about anyone else, but screens are the first thing i look at on notebooks. I suppose after the wicked trinitron range of tvs/monitors sony had to keep up the quality on their notebooks.

I looked at Vaios when I was getting my laptop but went for a top of teh range Dell instead. If you think the SOny's have good screens then you should see my DEll's 15" XGA screen, it is fantastic!

I looked at the Dell's, and I was tempted to buy one, mostly because when you buy a dell before the end of this month (I think it is) you get a Palm m500 included., but the whole thing was $1000 more expensive than the Vaio, and I am unfortunately on a budget.

    dell

yes, i just reviewed a dell inspiron C800, with a 15.1" screen, and I must admit it was really great. Although not as crisp as i like them. Does the little push button lid really annoy you. It took me like 10 minutes to open the basted. Maybe its just me though!

So Sketch, where's the link? Don't keep us waiting! For that price I'd buy one myself, in fact I'm looking for one as we speak!

    Sorry, dominique.

    Here's the specs. http://www.sonyvaio.com.ua/vaio/nb/pdf/fx220.pdf

Do a search on google for the model number and you can find it ranging in price from $1600-$2300.

I should add that the model # is PCG-FX220K! Not the regular FX220.

I have heard numerous complaints about the battery life on the Vaios. Make sure you look into getting a stronger battery or an extra one if there is a slot for it.

thanks for the insight, Hyper. I imagine that big ol' screen drains the battery real quick! I already had planned that, but that just confirms that hunch.

No prob, Sketch. The Vaio is a real good looking computer, might I add. Good luck with it.
