    Question database structure help needed

    Hi!

Setting up database structures has never been my strong point, so I would appreciate a bit of help from whoever has experience!

    Database requirments

Membership database which contains a persons username and password and links to
    • membership details database which contains info such as email, location, dob etc etc
    • database which holds link information, eg link url, title, description, keywords

The problem is - i envisage the database which holds the link information to be quite large - i.e hold thousands (if not tens of thousands) of member entered links and i'm not sure of the best way of going about this. Would I create a new table for each individual member or have one table holding the data for all the links for every member (and with thousands of links, surely this would cause the site to slow to a crawl when lots of people are trying to access/add/modify/delete information from it at the same time)

I know how basic databases work but have never tried to do something with such a large number of entries and am not sure about the best way of structuring it.

Thanks for any help you can give me!

    Scott

one table -- anything else is going to give you a world of hurt

performance will depend on whether you declare indexes, not on the number of rows

    will do!

one last question: can you recommend any books on amazon (.co.uk) that have practical tutorials/lessons on setting up member based websites, including the creation of the databases, and optimisation, as mentioned above..
