    IDE Hardrive Failure

    Anyone tell me if this message at boot up is a hard drive crash or what? Got a friend who's work computer is saying this.

    Before you really start doing anything, make sure all the connections are secure. Don't just look at them, actually push them all in to make sure they are actually in all the way, and not just half-in/half-out.

    Is his hard drive an IBM Deskstar by chance? Because a certain model of those has been known to fail.

    ahh the old 30 and 60Gb Deathstars where ace!

    One minute you where quite happily using the PC, the next there is a LOVELY grinding noise, or the Magic Smoke escaped from the HDD and it stopped dead.

    It's the reason to this day I won't trust IBM/Hitachi drives. Mainly because they INSISTED there was nothing wrong with them and they kept on making them and selling them. At least Maxtor and Western Digital put out recall notices when they have a faulty product!
