You should contact the seller and arrange to pay by another method, such as wire transfer, cheque, or international postal money order.

Wait, hold on. Let me guess what's going to happen:

    1. The total is $500. You send a cashier's check for $850, and ask to have the remainder wired to your account.
    2. The sucker who deposited your cashier's check sends $500 to the seller.
    3. Cashier's check bounces, the sucker's bank account is now overdrawn by $850
    4. You go to the bank to pick up your wire transfer, and have a good laugh.

Really now... this sounds crazy. You want a complete and total stranger to act as an intermediary for this transaction? Why don't you go through a reputable financial services company, like Western Union, escrow.com, or your local postal service?

Not to be a complete jerk, but that "I expect ..." remark was ridiculous.
