How the hell do they do that?

Sometimes when you add a website to your favourates, a little graphic appears besides the website when searching your favourates.
Sometimes the websites use a logo or something which makes the site stand out.
When you clear your internet history / catch out, the graphic dissapears.

How do they do it? It 's something which has baffled me for sometime now and iv'e never seen a tutorial on it.

Is it one of them big elusive secrets that only special people in the group get to find out?

Someone shed some light, its got me spooked

Actually I've seen plenty of tutorial for this. Do a search for "Favorites Icon" or something similar.

Why not use SitePoint's own favicon tutorial by Matt Mickiewicz? It's one of the best I've seen on the subject:

It is independent of any language. If you're using IE 5+ it will automatically request a favicon.ico from the current directory, as the tutorial explains.

For some unknown reason, I don't like favicon. I delete them from my cache and restore the blue E.
