silly idea - community website review

I was just thinking that it would be fun to run a website that reviews community websites... much the same way other product review websites work.

The focus would be on the latest and greatest community websites. There would be some well established review critiria... we could do "re-reviews" for existing communities that do significant upgrades... each review would get a final score or rating... and communities could be categorized by types... blogging community, forum community, social network, etc.

I suppose you could expand it a little more to include things like Flickr.. I guess flickr would be more like a service or tool than a community ???

Bah, there's probably a site out there that does exactly this already...

Great idea, that would be really cool. I don't know if you mean something like http://www.coolhomepages.com/ , where they use the star rating system out of ten or not. Though, if you made yours more detailed like the community reviews in www.amazon.com. (Where you can post a small paragraph or two about the product and rate it will the star system.) Then that would be awesome.

Anyways, good luck and let us know when it is done

Yeah, like cool home pages but focused on communities and not site design.

    or like:

    videogames: http://www.gamespot.com/reviews.html

    hardware: http://hardocp.com/reviews.html

    etc.

It would be a great idea... and there is a website out there that offers a listing of forums... but nothing too substantial from what I had seen while there... so I say go with it and see what you can accomplish. I know forum owners would definitely have no issue with being listed on the site... so content would be easy to come by.

Problem of course being who is going to do the review, what criteria they have etc etc. We did this in a small way a few years ago. Generally the sites reviewed were happy enough, though some of em got upset when we mentioned bad points.

If you submit for a review, you tend to have to take the good with the bad imho. You may need some reviews happening before people submit their sites as they will want to see criteria etc.

That's a really good point... You'd want to use the same criteria every time you reviewed a community... Hmm.. mabye:

Focus - what is the general focus of the community.
Usability - Is the system easy to understand, learn, and use?
Complexity - Does the system offer a variety of features?
Novelty - Does the system do something new and unique?
Content - Does the community have appealing content?
Attitude - Is the community friendly and welcoming or ???
Size - How large is the community?
Organization - How well is the community organized?
Censorship - To what extend is the community censors?
Moderation - How heavily is the community moderated?

I think I might have a lot of overlap in the list... I think it could be better.

    nah, dont do me.

Sounds like a cool idea , would be good to be able to see a list of different communites and how active they were and what they catered for etc. save signing up at all these crap sites because they wont let you look before you are a member.
