    "disabled" not allowed in XHTML Strict...

    EDIT: Nevermind, View Source on Sitepoint saved the day again :P

    <option selected disabled>Select an Author</option>
    <option disabled>-------------</option>

    is giving errors in validation because "disabled" is not allowed. how am I supposed to get around this, so a user can't try to select on of those, and go somewhere that doesn't exist?

    It might be a good idea to show the solution aswell.

    However, I would do it something like this instead:
    HTML Code:
    <label for="author">Select an Author</label>
    <select name="author" id="author">
     <option value="...">...</option>
    </select>
