Linux Anyone?

Hey All! Do not worry this is not flame-bait ha ha. I was wondering does anybody us an os besides windows and mac os? I am installing linux-mandrake today (mandrake.com) it's power is great and it's interface is sexy! I was wondering is anyone else interested in the linux world? Or unix?

I'm interested in the unix world. I use OpenBSD and FreeBSD, both of which are better than Linux in nearly every aspect (IMO). For the desktop, though, I use Windows...as soon as another OS can detect my exact setup and have it working in 5 minutes, I'll switch!

I have a triple boot Win98, WinNT and RedHat Linux. I use RedHat as a learning tool. It is my gopher. I am not versed in it. I am only learning. It's my whipping boy. :-)

I go back to Linux every so often. I would really like to learn it, but then I think, Why do I need to? Other than just to learn, how would it benefit me other than the "cool geek" factor, which to be honest, is not that much of a benefit.

I would really like to be able to use a graphical OS that is as easy as Windows, but there are none yet.

that is a bit true have you tried mandrake 8.0 it has a very nice interface another thing I do not understand why some of you boot up in windows NT or windows 98 any important difference between the two

Mandrake used KDE and GNOME (like Red Hat) and both have their good points but I never found them that stable. Linux as an OS is stable, but I think you will find that any mission critical Linux boxes will run without an X-server, I don't think any of the available GUI's for Linux are ready for the casual/Windows user.

Windows NT/2000 and now XP are all much more stable than Win 98 which is what most people will notice. But from a corporate point of view NT (and hence 2000) are much more secure. As always on connections to the internet become more common file security becomes more important, as far as I can see XP offers NT strengh security even on the Home version.

I don't even fiddle a whole lot in Linux anymore because it won't recognize my modem (and I don't want to go buy another one) and it doesn't recognize my sound card...so what good is it?

I don't have Linux running right now because I only have one computer and I don't enjoy double booting.

But when I do have it running it is usually either FreeBSD, Slackware, or SuSE, and sometimes Red Hat (if I get the patience level up )

yeah winmodem! ai! I am going to be hooking up a Linux boxthrough a KVM switch so I can go back and forth betwene Windows and Linux and keep my wheel mouse and 21" monitor!!
