set up site to receive text messages

i really don't know where to put this so i'll put it here.

how do sites like google and yahoo set up numbers that can send and receive text messages. googles is GOOGL (46645) and you can get search results, local results, weather, stock quotes...all that good stuff.

if i wanted to set up a site that send and received info from text messages, how would i set up one of those numbers? where do you get them?

while that's a great description of what it is, it doesnt say much about implementing a working version on a website.

my main question is how do i get a phone number for my server so it can send/receive sms messages. my guess would be its like a 1-800 number where you pay $XX amount for the number. but i don't know where to go for it

    SMS on your server

You will have to upload the appropriate sofware and configure your server. For examples of available apps - Short Message Service server software http://www.cswl.com/whiteppr/tech/sms.html
I imagine that once you have your own message center set up you can get a phone number for it.

You can send out your messages via a internet gateway, and then receive it using a GSM modem and SMS Gateway software installed on your PC. To do this, you need to set the sender number as your GSM modem.

Here's 2 software that can allow you to do this - http://www.sms-gateway-software.com, http://www.kannel.org.
