I'm going to be setting up a network between a desktop and a laptop pretty soon, and I wanted to know if you guys have had any good/bad/whatever experiences using LapLink to move files and run the other computer and what not.
I'm not really familiar with the program at all, but it was recommended to me by a fairly reliable source, but if you could comment on it at all it would be greatly appreciated.
If you're just going to use it for sharing files you don't need it.
If I need to access a computer on my network, I just use NetMeeting with remote desktop sharing setup.
A good alternative is PCAnywhere, which is made by Symantec, I believe - they are very reliable and well-known.
I'm also going to have to use it to share Internet... sorry I didn't specify that before. My desktop is going to be my server and I want the laptop to be able to connect through the desktop.
My inclination is to just a buy a hub and work from there, but I'm not sure if that's feasible. Have to check it out...
Back to the subject though, has anyone ever used LapLink?
You don't need Laplink to share files over a local network. From what I understand it is like PcAnywhere which I know is for sharing files and controlling a computer over the Internet or dial-up.
To share files on a local network all you need are the same protocols installed on all teh machines, usually TCP/IP, IPX and NetBEUI (you can usually do without IPX, unless you want to do LAN gaming, and NetBEUI).
As for sharing the Internet, if you go with two network cards in one computer, you'll need proxy software on it to share the connection to the other computer, see this tread for a list of some of the most popular proxies. If you go with a hub they should both work independently.
Yeah, I think I'm going to set up a network with Win2K instead of using LapLink.
