    securing digital products

I am developing a site that allows members only to download PDF and Word docs.

I am puzzling over how to achieve this. if I place the documents in a directory in the web root, they won't be secure and even non-members could download them. I could use htaccess to protect this directory but I don't want to expose the member to a htaccess login (or to expose a htaccess password to the member).

Another option may be to store the docs outside of the web root, and only move them into an accessible directory when a member clicks a download button.

Feedback and alternatives would be most welcome.

Look at example #1. Read the files from somewhere outside of the web root.
