    Greatest?

I nominate Lance Armstrong as the greatest pure athlete in the world. Ever.

Lance was great. However I would have to go with Either Michael Jordon or Pele.

That game were Jordon had the 102 fever and still managed to score 38 points and win the game -- unhuman.

Both of those guys were the greatest athletes in their sport. Being the greatest athlete ever is a different level and speaks to who the person is as well. Lance was the greatest athlete because of not only the fact that he overcame testicular cancer, but how he overcame it. On the physical level, those guys could go for 48 minuts or 90 minutes and score tons of points, but it takes a special breed to push through the pain for 2600+ miles on a bike...

I would have to go with Jordon, he was capable of winning games for the Bulls when it looked like they where down and out more or less on his own. The level that man could raise his game to without any noticable effort was simply awesome.

I like Lance but if he announces he's coming out of retirement and trying for an 8th win, I'm going to be sick...

I think Babe Ruth is the greatest athlete ever. All those home runs and still plenty of time for booze and cigars!

I agree with you, Sketch. The fact that he's just absolutely dominated the sport (seven times in a row, no less) is just absolutely dumb-founding. And Lance is leaving at the absolute top of his game. I'm glad he's not coming back (and this is something he's positive on- this was his last race... no more Jordan half-comebacks to embarass himself), since he just leaves on a perfect note. Props to him. He's the best.

I don't think Jordan came back because he wanted to embarass himself. Otherwise, he would have stayed retired.

I think it was the love for the game that brought him back.

That and the fact that he wanted to help the 911 disaster. He did donate his entire salary while he was playing for the wizards.

And he was still scoring 20 points a game, the team just sucked.
