    Ads in a forum?

What is the best way to place ads in a forum without hurting it too much?

adsence on the top maybe between threads?

    what do you think?

I use both adsense and some standard banners in rotation in the header. For me the adsense works best near the top either above, or between posts, or also in a skyscraper style on the left. But the results are fairly nice. The CTR is obviously not as high as other sites due to the fact that the forums have a high number of repeat visitors everyday, but it helps pay the bills.

Most forums drop adsense just below the banner and above the actual forums and threads themselves.

AdSense and other ads preform best in a few different places mainly the very top of the page, slightly above the forums/threads or on the right or left hand side as a skyscraper. You may also want to consider putting banners on the archive or search engine friendly part of your site, if you have such an area.

I put adsense after first posts in topics. I thought it would have a high CTR as I did my best to make it look like a user had posted it and the adsense was just their message. But to be honest I get a CTR of around 0.2% with most days having 0 clicks which I assume is bad.

Since I hate to see ads between the posts I thought my members will share the feeling. And so that I don't hurt them I have some links (members with 20 posts get a temporary link in the header) and a small adlinks block in the header and the adsense ad in the bottom. A member already noticed the ads are pleasant since they are visible, but don't stick to much so that they become annoying. I cannot comment on the success since I have to work at the promotion and traffic more and then see the outcome.

I really cant stand it when people have adsense like that. No offense, just saying. Like said above most people at a forum are repeat visitors and they will soon click on that they are adds even if you make them look as much like real posts as you can.

That's where I put mine. I think putting any between posts and threads really sucks...

I put mine just under the banner in a specialized area set aside specifically for advertising. I only use adsense and I only put it in one place. I try not to over do it. I know personally I hate ad ridden sites.

Best is relative. That spot is great for a branded and private label ad but may not work as well for adsense or a cpc ad.

The placement of ads really depends on the type of community and length users will visit your site. For sites with high amounts of impressions per user, its a terrible idea to blast users with ads.

However, sites that generally bring users in-and-out quickly, there's no problem with adding ads between content boxes, etc.

I always recommend to my clients that they do their ads in unique ways, and don't stick to standard ad placement. Unique sizes and colors for ads can dramatically improve CTR and EPC.

I Integrated adsense into the signature of the first post in a thread.

I like the way Sitepoint does it as well... it definitely catches my eye, which I'm sure is the point.

Adsense below the navbar, and small 88x31 buttons that I sell myself right above the quick reply box work well for me, and they seem to be relatively unobtrusive.
