Microsoft has taken a bovine tact. So Longhorn could be replaced by Windows Brown Cow, Windows Bull, Windows Mad Cow, Windows Farm Aid, etc. Could get interesting!

I forsee much quoting of "Asta la vista, vista!" in the future. Perhaps a competitor's marketing ad?

Jokes aside, Windows Vista doesn't sound all that bad to me. As emstro said, I think using nouns as opposed to versioning will better Windows.

Googling "Windows Vista" turns no relevant results, although the first link shows some 1990s Windows technology by the same name.

Microsoft names Windows versions after ski hills, lodges, and big mountains in Canada (Western Canada, right above Washington -- that's B.C. btw )

Yup. Windows XP was called Whistler, which is a famous ski resort. Longhorn is a pub located at Whistler. The microsoft executives go up there a lot and employees are known to get trips up there as bonusses..

The name isn't that bad - not great, but it could be worse IMO.

Domains with "Vista" in them are really going fast, but it looks like they're already getting oversaturated, so I don't think I'll bother getting any. There already seem to be more "vista" domains registered than "xp" domains.

How about: The First Version of Windows that Doesn't Crash All the Time.

Windows FVW-DCAT .. it doesn't have the same ring, but it would be everything I ever wanted out of a windows based OS.

Erm, yes, because, you know, Firefox and Opera and other browsers will be totally affected in there CSS support by the Operating System.

Vista just doesn't sound very, cutting-edge or techy, or exciting. "tiger" sounds ferocious and awesome, XP sounds hip and EXTREME, what does vista tell me?

Who really gives a damn what it will be called?

I mean, seriously, if you have a PC you will either install Vista or Linux. Simple. Who cares about the name?

Obviously, Microsoft doesn't. But then they don't seem to care much about their software, either.

It's a stinky name. I would have called it Windows 3.1 2. That'd be cool.

I'm sure everyone hates it until it comes out and becomes a household name - then it's fine. A lof of things sound stupid at first - Opera?? Firefox, Linux - all sounded stupid to me at first - you get used to it.
