It came as a bit of a shock to me to hear the term "Vista", but i supose it will be one of those things that we get used to hearing

www.vistawindows.com.au ... someone's gonna be really happy ... or really mad about the new OS name.

The name's not that creative, but at the same time I'm not surprised. It is better than XP though.

Vista - lame, lame, lame. It means "view". ooooh windows view....awesome representation of 64-bit power (not). Besides there are a bunch of software products called Vista already.

PS it's Hasta la vista. But it's ok, the warez search engine got it wrong too.

Haha. yeah, what a horrible name. I can just see all the linux guys going nuts "hasta la vista, vista" every time a security bug is announced or something.

windows vista is not bad since they had this thing they called windows me, nt, xp etc.

But when you look at all the problems in configuring these windows for internet connection and other things compared to apple macintosh. You say imac is cool. Gentlemen, I do not mean to start the comparative battle.... again.

Vista... what is MS thinking... that’s the worst name yet!

Windows Longhorn sounds 100x better than 'windows vista'.

It sounds like a car name. Maybe Windows Vista will have power windows, locks and doors. Maybe it will have curse control so I won’t have to do anything myself. I wonder… can I upgrade to leather…

    (I understand the cheesy post I have… I’m just really bored…)

Does it really matter what name they use? I think it's safe to say that the performance of the OS is all that matters.

Trying to make MS feel bad because of the name they chose won't change a thing really.

    From a marketing perspective, abolutely!

From a people-on-forums-are-making-fun-of-us perspective, probably not.

Amen. From a marketing perspective, they should problably call it Windows Apple. Might give'em some respect.

from a marketing perspective? they don't need to do any marketing. when people go to best buy to buy a computer, a windows OS is on every computer. its not even a question of whether or not they should get windows, but rather which windows pc they should get.

i don't think the name, no matter how good or bad it is, will affect the OS sales much at all.

I'm more partial to "Windows X" since it would piss off users of every other operating system out there (OSX, X Windows on *nix systems). Plus it would probably start a good lawsuit between MIT and Microsoft.

I think they should just call it Windows 2006. But I am sure that by 2010 we'll be used to the Vista name!

    they should be more honest.

"Windows Crufty" would be suitable, or "Windows Extra Value", it's going to have enough Fat for a McDonalds meal, this we already know

It's a good name in my opinion. They're definitely following Apple's lead in using nouns rather than version numbers and letters.

Apple only uses nouns in its codenames (and Microsoft does too). Public release names are just the version number (OS 10.4, not Tiger)

Marketing affects sales, and is one of Microsoft's strengths. (Remember, marketing is one of the reasons that Windows is on all those PCs at Best Buy. It's the *place* part of the marketing concept)

The name is involved with the promotion and brand image. Even if other areas of their strategy are where their strengths lie, the little things have a impact too and should always be considered.

The day I decide "I don't need to do any marketing" will be the same day I start to lose business, no matter how large a company I am.

    edit --
    VGarcia:
Just happened to notice (in the link I just posted) that Best Buy stated the Mac Mini is loaded with OS X 10.4 "Tiger" (scroll all the way to the bottom). They're advertising the code name. I wonder if we'll see the same thing with Vista/Longhorn?
