    Longhorn Goes to Pieces: http://news.com.com/2100-1016_3-5212077.html

"Microsoft will either scale back hoped-for features or prioritize others, said Al Gillen, an analyst with research firm IDC."

"As the dates for future release get closer, Microsoft will be able to get a better handle on what features will make it into Longhorn."

Longhorn to Arrive in 2006 http://www.computeractive.co.uk/itwe...rn-arrive-2006

"Microsoft has announced plans to deliver Longhorn, the next version of the Windows desktop client, in 2006. But to meet this deadline, Longhorn will not include some previously announced features, such as the WinFS storage subsystem."

Microsoft more open about Longhorn features http://www.networkworld.com/news/200...micromore.html

"The final version of Longhorn is scheduled to be broadly available in December 2006."

In other words, it will be available in June 2007.

"And so it goes, on and on. Feature after feature is cut, promise after promise is broken, and what do we have at the end of the day? XP SP3. If Microsoft fails to deliver something approaching decent with Longhorn then they will be in trouble. Big trouble. And most people haven’t even realized this yet. But they will soon enough."

As for the value of a name, there's been lots of publicity about the relative popularity of certain high-tech brand names lately. Apple and Google are apparently near the top, while Microsoft is going down for the count. I think it's largely because Apple and Google deliver quality products and don't have a reputation for...uh, shall we say operating outside the realm of ethics or the law?

If LongVista turns out to be a quality upgrade, it could give Microsoft an enormous boost, and the name Vista could be seen in a favorable light. But if it turns out to be another Microsoft bomb, I think the name will only help it sink faster.

It will also be interesting to see how browsers affect the big picture. Microsoft recently released (or will soon release - I'm not wasting my time on it) an Internet Explorer upgrade, but how many people are going to bother downloading it? Probably not many, so it likely won't be widely distributed until people buy it bundled with Hasta la Vista. By then Firefox will probably be in its thirteenth incarnation, still leading the pack.

    Hasta la Vista, Vista.

but back on topic of vista...unlike most people here, im not just gonna say "its gonna suck!" I'll wait until i get a chance to try it out. but no matter how good it is, i'm not going to buy it. i don't think it will run well on my powerbook

Longhorn is a joke as far as im concerned. This is Microsoft, one of the worlds largest software corporations and their attempt at an 'improved' OS is just pathetic.

What makes you say that? Have you seen the new OS? Do you really think that a company this large and this successful will create something crappy? Sure there will be things we don't like... We need something to complain about right?

I think it is pathetic how many people have to talk bad about Microsoft. For no real good reason. It seems a company simply can not get too big, or people will get jealous and start complaining... Without Microsoft, the PC world would be much further behind then we can even think of!

I was obviously talking about what we have seen of 'Vista' so far.

I've said before, you have no idea where the PC world would be if there was no MS. Yes it could have been worse, it could have been better, who knows or cares.

you really think that a company this large and this successful will create something crappy?
Don't use Windows much do you?

You think it's jealousy? Heh. I must just be a linux enthusiast with a grudge against MS right?

How long since XP was released? How delayed has Vista been? And Paul sounded rather unimpressed here: http://www.winsupersite.com/reviews/longhorn_5048.asp

I think Microsoft has accomplished a lot. But it just seems once they got big they stopped careing about the overall user experience. They started releasing crap like Windows 98, Windows ME, and Windows XP. Yes I agree that Windows XP was a great improvement over the previous versions of windows but the fact they havn't released a new version of IE in over 4 years maybe longer because they didn't think it was worth their time. Im finally glad they're seeing that its hurting them in the end. Im actually looking forward to seeing the final product of Windows Vista. I will not judge it until I use it.

I am a big fan of Mac OS. Mac OS has it's advantages and disadvantages like any other OS. I will continue to use both Mac OS and Windows OS both at the same time. But I will always prefer my Mac OS.

I think it's more a matter of HOW Microsoft got so big - and how Bill Gates uses his power.

You mean Bill Gates is the only person in the whole wide world who could have improved the personal computer? From what I've read, he didn't even invent the term "windows."

I think that if Bill Gates had never been born - or if he had been born in Tanzania or the fishing village of Anacortes, Washington, or if his father was a baker rather than a corporate attorney - the PC may have advanced a little more slowly, but once it got off the ground, it would have gone much further in the absense of a monopolistic behemoth that stifles creativity and competition.

Once you buy into the Microsoft monopoly, you find yourself buried under so much crap, you realize that the real secret to Microsoft's success is marketing patches to fix its countless software blunders.

I dunno about you, but I'd love to be a billionaire, even if it meant being a monopoly with a kickass marketing team and piece of garbage product.

I think everyone posting on this forum would like to be a billionaire (though most would probably prefer not to be associated with crapware). What does that have to do with anything?

I use it every day. Not just as a regular user, but I also do network administratioon, and although there may be some frustration at times, it is amazing what they have accomplished.

Did I say that? No, but Bill Gates is a very large contributer. If he had not been born, I am sure someone else could have done the same. But the fact is that Bill Gates was around and accomplished a heck of a lot more then you or I.

Sure I'd use my power - for good. As for creating a monopoly, I suppose most people crave power, but some people prefer to acquire it honestly.

Ironically, the very tactics Bill Gates used to create his empire may prove his undoing. As I mentioned earlier, Apple and Google are hot brand names compared to Microsoft. Of course, apples have always been a symbol of wholesomeness, while everyone knows Apple makes the best computers on the market. Google is giving Microsoft stiff competition, and it's apparently playing by the rules for the most part.

Vista could be a strategy to give Microsoft a fresh start with a word not weighed down by too much baggage.

And regarding the squabble over dropped features...

I was under the impression that it's normal for features to be dropped, even announced ones, during the course of development for most software, so this doesn't seem like too big of a deal to me. And also, what's the point of having a dare if it just ends up as a game of semantics ping-pong?

I take "until I see you" as "can't wait to watch, track and effectively control your every action, eventually". Sounds like big brother is watching or can't wait to watch. Didn't M$ have monopoly issues? Sounds like a symptom or step towards domination.

The name Vista is okay but anthropology teaches that names hold much more importance than what others have mentioned here. Not enough to change OSes but enough to make you feel good or bad about your decisions, longterm. That is enough to spark a future change.

If some of the Vista feature reports are correct, then it sounds like they are still cataching up with features that have been implementeed with non M$ OSes like FreeBSD and Linux distros.

Vista sounds EXTREMELY expensive. I am sure it will be in true M$ fashion. Just make it so I am not fixing it but using as it was meant to be.

    Question

    Other suggestions besides "Vista" anyone?

At first the name sounded pretty lame, but it is slowly growing on me. While I like the Longhorn name I don't think it has as much appeal as "Windows Vista". While the new OS is being played up as a revolutionary OS, from what I have seen, it is little more than a face lift. Still not as impressive or as clean as OSX. I think a great opportunity exists for Macintosh to win some hearts and minds.

Suggestions so far from myself and others: (as lame as they may be)
    Windows Avalon
    Windows XT (eXTreme)
    Windows XP 2.0
    Windows 2006
    Windows 6.0
Windows VI (then VIsta makes sense)
    Windows Longhorn
    Windows OSNL
    Windows Indigo
    Windows Doors
Windows Are for Jumping out of
Open Windows (When windows is one day open source - works well)
    Windows ....

I predict that the media will eventually give some press to this nickname created here on SitePoint - Hasta la Vista - which, of course, is linked to THE TERMINATOR, both the movie and a certain state governor.

The question is what will Vista terminate - the competition or Microsoft?

Even if the name rocks, it could be dragged down its nicknames and associations. Not that there's much M$ (as so many here refer to it) could to about it. Their critics would inevitably create unflattering nicknames based on just about any name they could come up with.

Oops, I didn't realize this term had already popped up in the media. Nevermind.

However, I just discovered that Microsoft is already being sued over the name Vista: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/07...emark_dispute/

    Here's another interesting article:

New Microsoft OS Name 'Vista' Scorned by Anti-Microsoft Insurgents
    http://hostsearch.com/news/microsoft_news_3371.asp

It says the name Vista was apparently chosen "by an advanced algorithm which avoids any name which could be made to rhyme or form a near-rhyme with any derogatory word whether proper English or slang."

Frankly, I think they should have used a little more common sense rather than high-tech on this one, and I find it hard to believe they tested it against over 4 million rap songs. For crying out loud, how many rap songs could there be in the first place, and after you exhaust the most popular 1.5 million rap songs, what do the others matter???

It also notes that IE 7 beta translates into, “my grandmother’s stinking armpit” in a north-eastern dialect of Hindi. Gates should have named it Firefox and used his stable of attorneys to fight off any lawsuits.

The Vista name wasn't "chosen" that way, but it was part of being shortlisted. Other possibilities included "Ruby" and "Seven", apparently, though the official shortlist was never released.

I personally don't care about the name. I know I am going to use it at some stage as I have been using several versions of Windows so far.

I have driven cars or ridden bikes with not very appealing names such as C3, FJ1200, XT600 or Y22 and they were never part of my decision to buy them.
