    Doctype and Search engines

    Hi all,

Iam building a site that uses a drop down menu using css and javascript, it works fine in IE but not in mozzilla. If, however, i remove the doctype 'XHTML 1.0 Transitional' it works in both.

My question is, if i remove the doctype what negative affect will that have? For example search engines?

Removing the DOCTYPE is a bad idea. Fix the code! You will no longer be standards compliant if you remove the DOCTYPE declaration.

a DOCTYPE won't affect your rankings. However, it will affect your ability to maintain your website especially as different browsers come out and render code differently. The DOCTYPE is your only chance to give them instructions on how to render your pages.
