    rate skills please

    Hey,
My name is Brian "koolbrian" and some sitepoint guru may know me well, maybe as a good webdesigner or a bad webdesigner. I posted this thread to know what's my value/rating. I'm building a webdesign service site, and i don't know how much to charge. Many people told me it depends on your skills. Here are a list of some webdesign stuff i made ,
    have a look, then try to rate the skills involved in the design {no content , design only}

After looking at those, please try to rate my skills, creativity,...

    Brian,
I see good stuff here. You have put some work in on some neat looking interfaces. However, the one weakness I see, and I could be wrong, is lack of creativity. I see much of the same kind of images. It all seems very much "the same" to me. I see some unique ideas, but I also see alot of recycled ideas. You've got the skills, no doubt, but everyone can't excell in every area...well, except Creole, but he's another story . Your area seems to be in the creativity dept. Artistic ability is strong. Scripting seems good. LAyouts seem well planned, but just that one thing of creativity.

Hope this helps you out. ;D

Ps: I really don';t think that Creole is good everywhere, they should be somewhere where he is ....

C'mon Brian, I was kidding about Creole....

Anyways, I don't want you to take me wrong. I think you are good at what you do. I don't think you are a bad designer. I think many of your graphics look..."digital"...for lack of a better word. They have that kind of robotic, slick, digital interface. That's not bad, but not all sites will require that kind of feel. I'm sure you can do other graphics, but so far, all I have seen are "Brian Studio" graphics and "Area Cool" Graphics. Some more feminine site mighbthave a softer look to them. Some may just be a rather plain informative site with good deep color tones. I'm sure you haven't had the opportunity to do other sites. I'm not faulting you on that. But, unfortuately, all I have to go by when "rating" you as you ask mer to is what you have provided, which is good, but very much same. Does this clear things up for you?

Brian, I think you'll find that this belongs in the web site review forum - as you know .

You claim to ask for an overall "skills" assessment, but then go on to ask for specific critique on various elements of your site. Post it in the right place & I'll be happy to respond!

Well, I think most of the graphics & sites you listed have an abnormal overdose of plain colors, maybe you should try to be a bit inventive in the way you use the colors, add contrast or smoothen them into the background...

Many pages look similar and what I directly noticed is that you're sticking too much on higher resolutions which required me to scroll horizontally very often. The first page looks clean but oversized whereas this page has a somewhat "misplaced" navigation bar. I mean the colors just don't match to the overall. Fonts are very important and probably it needs more study of typography and various good examples to get behind it and choose one that fits. Try these resources sites to get some rarer fonts:

    http://www.getfonts.com
    http://www.designerinaction.de
    http://www.iconian.com

IMHO to be a good designer you have to look at many websites and get an impression of how "today's webdesign" looks like. As more and more freelancer artists publish their innovative work you probably can copy one or the other impressive trick/idea.

    http://www.ojuice.org
    http://www.creationstorm.com
    http://www.deaddreamer.com

Well i'm just trying to help you by giving some critique and pointing to some very impressive examples

I know the people at Sitepoint will not like this but hey Brian you're being a sensitive baby! Sorry you can hate me all day but the point behind this is your design I will admit it's F***ing great but can you image users all users from the guy on his 95 Mac Performa with a 14.4 kbps modem Netscape 4.0 using your site? Your graphics are good but you must remember that you will be serving the world p.s. I wish I had your talent but my only skill lies in with actually coding so keep it up and do not worry what people say the people that respond to you are not just plan computer users they are well at least what I think the harshest critics you will find and that is a good thing! Do you know what a dumb AOL'er would say about your site right? They would love it because it is well pretty do you get that logic....

    Brian,
I agree with Sketch. Sites should have personality, but if all of your sites look the same it ends up being bad. I also agree about the colors, you're doing the same things a lot. I really like your designs, just make them a bit more varied.

    yes

Well. I had a look at your work, and I think i like it. By the look of it you have a fair bit of skill in all area's of website design, which can be good for what you want. See, if you wnat to build a site for somone by yourself, this is good work. BUT i think if you really want to suceed in on area (you know either, layout, code, graphics, marketing, etc) you have to ONLY do work in that area. If you get what i'm trying to say.

Most largish web companies have like one person for each part of the site. Someone gets the business, they pass what is needed, and the layout is formed. Then the graphic designer creates graphics, and it goes on.

But from what i've seen (and you are still young, hmmm, look who's talking.....) but it can only get better. You might want to have a fiddle around with photoshop (if you can get it). Somtimes it's benifical just to play around, not for any particular reason, just to get ideas, and even if you don't use them at that moment, save the idea for later.

A noticed a few little buggy things in your tests sites, like broken table with a one pixel gap. But thats enough form me, have fun.....
