    Hivemail competitors

So I popped over to Hivemail today to check them out (haven't been over there in years but I was looking at adding some usermail to one of my sites) and it looks like the product is dead.

No updates since August of 04, support complaints running rampant, and the real kiss of death was a post by the manager saying that although they had lost all their developers in the last year that they were looking for more and the product is not dead.

If you have to post that a product is not dead, well then it probably is or is at least on life support.

Any competitors to them out there that I can look into?

    Thanks

Nope, never tried socketmail. Somehow their website never won my trust. Check this listing by Edwin http://www.emailaddresses.com/email_providers.htm

OT: Are you sure you want to host your service yourself?

I know you outsource your e-mail but I get a little concerned with the loss of control and the fact that my provider could go under at any moment (not likely but still possible).

I'll check out the link thanks.

The e-mail is just a viral marketing tool to increase paid subscribers to the main site. If you don't pay you don't get one of the cool e-mail addresses so I'm not too worried about it getting out of hand in terms of numbers of subscribers or people using it to spam. I'd be jumping for joy if I had a thousand paid subscribers within 18 months to the service.

I would worry about incoming mail bombs/dictionary attacks/joejobs. And if you're running your mailserver and webserver on the same physical machine, it could lead to your site being down, to loss of revenue, etc. Oh and definitely publish SPF records for all domains you utilise!
