I signed up for MSN explorer and therefore got a email addy with it. I haven't used it a single time, never given it to anyone, and I get at least 2 SPAM messages a day!

    What's up with that

I agree, norfett. There are supposed to be spam filters for Yahoo, but it doesn't neccessarily work. I get nothing but spam in my Inbox.

I agree with the most-spammed one for sure, but interesting, in my experiences with Net@ddress, they give you a lot of spam. Notably, they're also closing their free service.

    Update on vote count.

    Most spammed:

    1)HotMail 3
    2)Yahoo 2
    3)Everyone.net
    4)Netaddress

    Least spammed:
    1)Yahoo
    2)Netaddress
    3)HotMail
    4)eng.mail.ru
    5)Everyone.net

Seems like the situation may be different for each one of us. One thing to note about spam is that we are not referring to e-mails from sources that we have either opted-in, or forgotten to opt-out. Rather, it is unrecognizable e-mails from unidentifiable sources using a dummy address as a tool.

www.myownemail.com -- I use them, the service can be slow sometimes but I never get spam I didn't bring on myself... NEVER.

Yahoo is pretty bad, Hotmail CAN be really bad. I have 3 aliases there... 2 NEVER get ANY spam, 1 gets enough spam to feed the world!

i use AOhelL fro my ISP, cos they let me on 24/7 for 14.99 and that is the most spammed account i have. i dont use the address at all, but i literlly get 30-40 a day.

yahoo isnt that bad for it as well, hotmail can be, it has good days and bad days, my email for my domain, d@oreosnbeer.com gets none hehe dont know if the AOhelL and oreosnbeer.com ones count...

    so my votes are;

    Least Spammed
    d@oreosnbeer.com
    Yahoo

    Most Spammed
    AOhelL
    Hotmail

Hotmail is by far the most spammed and u should be able to block unlimited emails as you get billions of emails about credit cards and homes. Hotmail sux

Yahoo! Mail doesn't recieve much, if any, spam, but the less popular the email service, the less spam it recieves

Most spammed has got to be Hotmail, as everyone else said.

I have used Yahoo for about 3 years now and I have only gotten about 4 or 5 spam emails in my entire using of it. People that get a lot of spam with Yahoo probably get it b/c they sign up with things and give out their e-mail address. I try not to do that, when I can.

I also like Yahoo b/c I can use it as a POP3 account in Microsoft Outlook. It makes it a lot faster to check e-mail.

i really don't think that a direct correlation between an e-mail provider and the amount of spam received can be established. generally speaking, spammers don't waste time targetting specific domain names, and the only reason i can think of that would cause one e-mail providers accounts to be spammed more is if they sold their mailing lists. however, most major e-mail providers including yahoo and hotmail have policies against selling your account information.

the quantity of spam that you receive can be more realistically linked to whether you publish your e-mail address in public areas or sign up for services with it, rather than which e-mail provider you use.

Yes, it is certainly true that half the time, the spam we received are the results of our own carelessness.

However, certain e-mail providers do in fact spam their users severely. HotMail is a prime example ..... I got a new account open and I didn't even fill out most of those 'questionaires'. I did not sign up for any newsletter, bulletin, or whatever. I just went through the registration process giving as little information as I possibly could to get by. Guess what ?!? Within the first 6 hours of getting my new e-mail address, not even a chance to use it yet ..... spam had arrived in my inbox.
I decided not to use it at all for a few days, so that I could monitor the amount of spam I get. Well, at the end of a 1 week long period, I have been a victim of approximately 8 spam mails per day, on average !!! Now, that is cause for concern. Topics of spam ranges from 'Best new car offers', 'University diplomas', 'Viagra', 'Porn', 'Fat-burning supplements', 'Improve your credit history' and etc.

With that said, there is certainly a very strong correlation between certain e-mail providers and the amount of spam.

I've used three freemail providers at various times. In order of increasing spam, they are:

    1) Yahoo! - get the very occasional spam msg.
    2) Net@ddress - used to get 1-2 spams a week.
    3) Hotmail - spam central

I think there's a lot to be said for not giving out your email address on sites, lists etc though. One thing I used to find was that I got tons of spam simply b/c I belonged to an eGroups discussion list.

I don't know how/why you guys are getting all of that. Did you add yourself to their member directory? I've had my hotmail addy for years and haven't gotten any spam (except their quarterly news). I use my account only for MSN Messenger.

av1998, what exactly are you suggesting that the reason is for receiving all that spam? that hotmail defied their privacy statement and sold your account info within hours after you signed up? i think not. microsoft makes money off of software, not selling mailing lists.

the spam you received is probably the result of the bad luck of having chosen the same username of a previous account holder who was getting a lot of spam.

also, judging by the erratic differences in the responses of people on this topic, the amount of spam you receive is definitely not dependent on your e-mail provider.

Weird. I have no spamming problems with Yahoo. Thank goodness cos that's the only account that I can get through for WAP access.

    Mailcity.com / mail.lycos.com - occassional.
    mail.nu - never.
