    Does .Com matter?

Does the extension of your domain (.com, .net, .org, etc.) matter in search engine results? I don't mind using something other than .Com, but for this project I really need to optimize for engines. Thanks in advance.

    From the SEO FAQ:

Sites with .com rank higher then with <TLD here>

This is another common myth that is untrue. The only time a domain extension can affect your ranking is if the search is based by country. The country-specific TLDs (e.g. .co.uk) will have priority over non-country specific TLDs (e.g. .com or .net).

No prob. Yankee fans get a lot of leeway here.

It is believed that Google gives .gov rankings a bonus -- but there isn't much we can do about that.

Yes, .com matters if you are trying to brand a product. People remember .com and if you don't use .com they may never remember to return to your site. For the majority of webmasters, though, you are getting traffic through search so it's not a big concern.
